1880s Bustle gown - Theatrical Costume course

A bustle gown was the second project, for which we had a six-week deadline to complete the outfit. The project was broken down in to: research and design development, creating all the underpinnings (combinations, corset, bustle cage and petticoat), pattern drafting using historical sources, drafting on the stand, and creating accessories consisting of a reticule and gloves.

Due to the structure of the gown, this project introduced many new skills. For example, this was my first experience of draping on the stand to create the bodice, apron and bustle pattern. Draping is such a creative method for making a pattern, as it allows freedom to modify the look and feel as you go. It also ensured an excellent fit for the final garment.
