Millinery and hair accessories
I completed a part-time introductory millinery course at Sheffield college, which ran for 16 weeks from September 2010 to February 2011. I wanted to use the course to specialise in historical hats, in preparation for starting the costume making course at the Northern College of Costume in June 2011. During the course I made a 1920s inspired cloche and 1960s pillbox hat using hat blocks and recycled felt hats; a beret and a 1920s skull cap (to practise flat pattern cutting); and a fascinator. In addition to hat making the course also covered decorative techniques, such as trims, fabric flowers and bows.
Since completing the course I’ve made floral hair accessories as part of a private wedding dress commission. It consisted of individual ribbon petals and wire and pearl handmade stamens.
