The Pirates of Penzance nighties - Scottish Opera
The Pirates of Penzance was designed by Jamie Vartan and set in the 1880s. I worked primarily on the ladies chorus and principal outfits (13 in total). Each character had a day and evening costume.
The ladies nightwear consisted of a nightie and dressing gown. My tasks were to help make some of the costumes for the first fittings, take notes during fittings, do alterations and finish the costumes.
The nighties and dressing gowns had beautiful detail on them. This involved various techniques, such as pin tucks, machine tucks, gathered frills, lace edging and hems, piped edges, rouleau loops and ties, drawstring waists and frilled cuffs.
